Up-and-coming talent is one of the most important musical resources that Australia has. These musicians are the future of the Aussie music scene, and it’s their songs that concertgoers will be screaming at the top of their lungs from those sweaty mosh pits. Understandably, it’s pretty important that we nurture this talent and give it an outlet with which it can be heard.
Thankfully, triple j and Unearthed are here to do just that for these future stars of Aussie music. But with countless artists springing up each day, and with a multitude tunes being uploaded to the service every minute, the question is, where do you start? Well, we can’t answer that exactly, but what we have done is compiled a list of the top five most-played unsigned acts on triple j right now. Have a read, you might just find your next favourite artist in this little list.
Didirri’s touching tunes tug at the heartstrings and draw you into a place you never thought possible. This fantastic muso cites some of music’s biggest names (including Joni Mitchell and Jeff Buckley) as influences, and with the way things are going, it won’t be too long before Didirri is mentioned within the same breath as Mitchell and Buckley in terms of the emotional depth of their musical output. Watch this space, Didirri is going places.
Having topped this list a few times in the past, Ruby Fields has been one of the most consistently popular unsigned acts on triple j, and for good reason. With a relatable approach to songwriting, and with a performance style that can only be described as being laid back and relatable, this young muso is going to be huge. With ‘P Plates’ still a triple j favourite, and a national tour coming soon, the future looks bright for Ruby Fields.
Press Club are living proof that rock is well and truly still alive. Having established themselves as one of Australia’s most brilliant up and coming punk bands in the country, Press Club have been also supporting some brilliant Aussie bands lately, including West Thebarton, who themselves featured on this list recently. Press Club are undoubtedly set to take the reigns as one of Australia’s biggest rock bands in no time.
Cub Sport have been seeing huge success in the last few years. After releasing the brilliant record This Is Our Vice last year, and having released their well-received follow-up album BATS, the Brisbane group are destined to be one of Australia’s biggest bands in no time. With a fresh, soulful approach to their music, Cub Sport have been bringing in more and more fans at every turn, giving them a fanbase that they truly deserve for all the hard work they’ve put into their craft over the years.
Another week of major success for Samsaruh, proving that 2017 is going to be remembered as the year that this Melbourne musician truly broke into the world of music. Still going strong off the success of her brilliant track ‘Golden To Thrive’, you’re going to be hearing plenty more from Samsaruh in the years to come, giving her the success that she well and truly deserves.
